Self-driving Uber rides could be picking you up this month

The company that once tried to make you resent from taking cabs is now moving to the next level of innovation. Self driving Uber cars. While everybody thought about Tesla, Uber will be using Volvos, at least for now. The project will be first implemented in Pittsburg. Uber has made a very rapid progress. Kits will be fitted into cars instead of in-house production like at Google.

Nearly at the end of 2014, Travis Kalanick hired dozens of world experts in autonomous vehicles to achieve his vision. For the autonomous vehicles section, Google has been a pioneer by experimenting with its homemade self driving cars and Tesla has made quite an impact with all its cars.

Uber’s Pittsburg fleet consists of specially modified Volvo XC90 sport-utility vehicles outfitted with dozens of sensors that use cameras, lasers, radar, and GPS receivers. A hundred of these cars are expected to be deployed. For now, an engineer, who can take the wheel, and a co-pilot taking notes will be in the cars. The two companies, Volvo and Uber, are partnering up with a $300 million deal.

Uber is also thinking about buying, Otto, a 91-employee company that produces self driving trucks. Otto consists of many high profile Apple, Google and Tesla ex-employees. Ford has also announced something similar with autonomous car-sharing rides.
