Sony RX100 Mark V announced with faster autofocus

Sony is expanding its line of RX100 compact cameras today with the RX100 Mark V. The Mark V is the top of the range model which packs an even faster autofocus system than its previous models. It sports a 1-inch, stacked Exmor RS CMOS image sensor with 20.1-megapixels of resolution, 24-70mm equivalent f/1.8-2.8 aperture zoom lens, as well as Sony's newest Fast Hybrid AF autofocus system. It will be priced at $1,000 and be available this month.

The compact size that can fit in any pocket makes the Mark V look very similar to its predecessors. It includes the same pop-up viewfinder and LCD display and the control ring around the lens which can also be spotted on older models.

The camera's performance is new as Sony praises its improved focus system from last year's Mark IV. And, according to Sony, the new sensor has on-sensor phase detection, which allows autofocus to be similar to a DSLR. There is a total of 315 detections points which cover 65% of the image sensor. Thanks to its new processor, the Mark V can shoot 24 frames per second at full resolution for up to 150 frames. Sony says the camera can do this with both JPEG and RAW files.

As well as taking stills, the Mark V can record 4K video with autofocus tracking and full pixel readout. Videographers will have access to pro features such as Picture Profile and S-Log2 / S-Gamut. The 4K video is captured at 100Mbps.

Although the Sony RX100 Mark V isn't cheap, it is the most powerful pocket camera out there right now, and it's hard to beat.
