BT TV introduces new 4K quality coverage
BT has announced that it will bring in many new elements of its coverage including UHD 4K quality media. 4K (UHD; Ultra High Definition) quality is basically four times better than normal HD quality.
BT Sport Ultra HD will be the first 4K channel in Europe, with the FA Community Shield match as the first broadcast. It’ll definitely be some eye-candy!
BT also announced pricing for viewing next season's Champions League.
The football matches will be free for customers who subscribe to BT TV However, BT broadband customers who use the Sky or the BT Sport app will be charged £5 a month to view the games.
BT Sport Ultra HD will provide a range of football matches and tournaments just for football fans.
That’s not all, BT will also launch a 4K set-top box, however, viewers will require a 4K compatible television. This service will only be available to BT Infinity customers, due to the bandwidth required to stream 4K.
"Being one of the first to launch 4K in the UK will be quite an accolade for the company" - Paulo Pescatore, an analyst from CCS Insight.
Although this new feature of BT TV may be seen as a huge benefit, it also comes with some cons. Viewers will need to purchase a new 4K television as well as upgrade their broadband service. In retrospect, BT TV may have made a revolutionary step forward by bringing 4K coverage. It’ll be interesting to see what competitors such as Sky and BBC have to offer as a response to BT’s move.
