Leica + Huawei camera partnership continues with new R&D centre

German optics enterprise and camera manufacturer Leica, and smartphone company Huawei have revealed prospects for a brand-new research and development/innovation centre to be opened up. The department is going to be situated at Leica's headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany.

The R&D centre will be called 'The Max Berek Innovation Lab'. You might be wondering why it has such a name; the answer is that it's been named after the famous and respected optical pioneer, late Max Berek, who had produced a wide-range of Leica's first lenses. The move is an effort to strengthen and progress the partnership of both of these companies that was first introduced back in February. In April, we saw the result of the partnership as the companies launched Huawei's Leica-branded P9 smartphone.

Huawei stated that the R&D centre will "drive further development of optical systems and software-based technologies to improve imaging quality in a wide range of photographic and mobile device applications." That's including Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality technologies. There isn't any news on when both companies will be cooking up new things in the new department.

Do you think there'll be some exciting things popping up from both of these companies in the near future? We'd love to know what you guys think, so feel free to drop a comment below and start a discussion now!
