Google announces Chromecast 2

As well as the two new Nexus phones released, Google announced the Chromecast 2 and Chromecast Audio. The Chromecast sold over 20 million units since 2013 so it won’t be a surprise if Google sell more than that. The new Chromecast will still be a HDMI dongle, but will have a few more features than the previous one. It should be available starting from the 29th of September and will priced around $35.

It has a new design which is considerably different. It has a disk shape with a flat HDMI cable that plugs into your TV. It’ll be available in Black and two new colours: yellow called Lemonade and Coral which is red. The colour doesn’t make a difference on the functionality but it’s just for your colour preference. It will work at a higher resolution which will make it compatible with 4k televisions.

Google also updated the internals of the Chromecast. It now includes support for new WiFi streaming standards. There are now three antennas for Wi-Fi streaming while the first gen only had one.

There are now thousands of apps that support Chromecast streaming from the Google pLay Store. Apps such as Netflix, Google Photos, Discovery and Sing TV are just a small handful.

As only a small number of people have upgraded to 4K TVs, the Chromecast doesn’t support it, but they say people can expect something with Android TV.

Google also unveiled a brand new device called the Google Chromecast Audio. Stay tuned for a full article on that.
