At the Microsoft event today, two new flagship Lumia devices were announced; the 950 and 950XL. So what’s special about these two devices, and why should you watch out for them?

The 950’s codename is Talkman, and the 950XL’s codename is Cityman. It’s also worth mentioning that the new devices aren’t called Nokia Lumia anymore, they’re called Microsoft Lumia phones now. Will this be enough to swing some of the users of Android and iOS to join the 3% of smartphone users with Microsoft phones? I doubt it.

The Lumia 950

We can expect to see these two devices as the first devices with windows 10 for mobile out of the box, which means that you’ll get Cortana, OneDrive, Outlook and Edge Browser, to name just a few.

The 950XL will come in with a whopping 5.7” display, which is still smaller than the old Lumia 1520. It will have a quad HD display, as will the 950, but at a slightly smaller screen size of 5.2”. This gives a ppi of 518 and 564, respectively.

Microsoft is pushing the Lumia line’s historically great range of smartphone cameras by offering a 20-megapixel shooter, with OIS and 4K video capabilities on both devices. The phones also have a dedicated camera button on the side! There will also be a 5MP selfie shooter on the front of each device.

The 950XL will come with a not too shabby 32GB of ROM, with the option for expansion via microSD. It also follows the recent trend of using USB-C, including fast charge, which will get you from no battery to 50% in just half an hour! This is the same for the 950 too, as the XL brings a 3300mAh battery, and the 950 brings a slightly smaller 3000mAh battery.

The Lumia 950XL

The main difference between these two flagship devices is the internals – The 950XL boasts an octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor while its smaller brother packs in with a hexa-core Snapdragon 808 processor. Both feature 3GB of RAM onboard, too. Interestingly, the phones both have liquid cooling systems, which should be interesting to test with the snapdragon 810, which is practically famous for its overheating issues!

You can buy the 950XL for $649, and the 950 for $549 starting from next month!
