Microsoft announced the Lumia 550, a killer budget Windows 10 phone

In the midrange area of the smartphone spectrum, Microsoft announced the Lumia 550 at a event on Monday. Let’s take a look into the features it brings. The 550 has a 720p, 4.7” display, packing a PPI of 314. It also brings 4G LTE via nanoSIM. It also packs a 2100mAh battery, which isn’t too shabby! Windows 10 will ship on the 550, so you can expect all of the Microsoft stock apps, such as Cortana and OneDrive.

Under the hood, we get a quad core snapdragon 210 at 1100mHz, paired with 1GB of RAM. We don’t, however, get USB-C charging, instead we are stuck at MicroUSB 2.0.

You will probably be disappointed to find that the cameras on this phone are somewhat poor – a 5MP back camera with LED flash, and 720p 30fps video. On the front, we get a 2MP selfie camera. This is quite a contrast from the high-end 950, that was also announced at the Microsoft Event.

Overall, this phone could be very competitive as a midrange phone, but as some features, such as camera are lacking, I don’t see this becoming something as successful as the moto G.

The 550 can be expected to hit the shelves sometime this November, for a insane low price of $139USD!
