Microsoft announces the Display Dock, that turns your phone into a computer

In a quite intuitive way, Microsoft is trying to make you not just buy a Lumia phone, but also accessories and the Microsoft Windows operating system. They plan to do this with a new product, the display dock. The display dock uses and external monitor in order to give your Lumia (currently only the 950 and 950XL are confirmed to work) a near-PC experience. You can still answer calls and do other tasks on your phone, without interrupting what you’re doing on your monitor. This is achieved with a USB Type-C connector going into the display dock, and an HDMI output into your monitor.

The dock also has 2 USB 2.0 ports, as well as a USB 2.0 high current charging port, for all of your charging and data transferring needs. (or for use with a USB keyboard and mouse!) The display also kicks in at a full HD 1080p.The UI is largely like Windows 10 for PC, but the taskbar is a little different, and you can also check your battery and signal on the desktop.

This is a very, very smart idea, but it raises the question about running Windows apps again – universal windows apps will work with the product, but how many developers will build their apps for an operating system that only owns 3% of the market share for smartphones? You can expect to find the dock online when Microsoft other products hit the shelves, and we have sources claiming that it will cost a whopping $120USD! We can’t confirm the actual price, however, as Microsoft didn’t tell us.
