Classrooms everywhere will soon get Google Cardboard

Google has been offering the Cardboard VR headset for a while now to the general public, which only costs $5 to build, and as the name suggests, is built out of cardboard. But Google hasn't been offering Cardboard into the educational system, until now, as they are now beginning to offer it to classrooms around the world.

Google announced Expeditions, which is a free software program that lets students take a field trip in VR (Virtual Reality.) Expeditions will come in a box set with the Cardboard headset included as well as teacher-software that allows teachers to control the system from a tablet. The Expeditions software and headsets will be free of charge to the school, according to The New York Times.

Expeditions isn't new, however. It was first announced back in May at Google I/O, alongside a new version of Cardboard that could be used with both Android and Apple's iPhone. Expeditions uses Google Street View images that creates the VR experience, instead of using a dedicated VR rig, like the GoPro Odyssey that was also announced. There are various locations that Expeditions uses from Street View, and some can include museums and art galleries in Verona, Italy, or even the old Headquarters of Lehman Brothers to give a first-hand look at what happens in a financial crisis. And there are about 100 VR field trips available for students and teachers to try out.
