OnePlus X - the new benchmark for budget smartphones
OnePlus unveiled another device today widening their smartphone portfolio to three devices. The new OnePlus X takes style and design as its main concern, bringing a decent set of specs and jaw-dropping price tag with it.
Starting with the design, the OnePlus X uses dual glass panels at the front and back with an anodized metal frame separating the pieces. The glass has a glossy mirror-like finish giving the X a premium look and feel. The device is also very thin, measuring in 6.9mm thick and tipping the scales at 138g.
Under the hood, is the familiar Snapdragon 801 quad-core chipset backed up with 3GB of RAM. This is the exact same internals as the OnePlus One from last year. OnePlus have stated they chose to use the Snapdragon 801 over the new Snapdragon 617 because it provides better overall performance. It was rather disappointing that they didn't opt for a new CPU such as the Snapdragon 805 or 808.
The display measures in at 5 inches with a 1080p AMOLED panel at the show. The OnePlus X will ship with just 16GB of built-in storage but this time OnePlus will offer the option of expansion via the included micro SD card slot for up to 128GB of extra storage.
The rear camera has a 13MP shooter with an ISOCELL sensor and f/2.2 lens. The X will be unable to shoot video at 4K resolution as its only capped at 1080p. The selfie camera has a pleasing 8MP sensor.
There are noticeable differences when it comes to its big brother, the OnePlus 2. The X uses a standard micro USB plug rather than the USB Type C and the loss of the fingerprint scanner is also disappointing. The X also does not support NFC.
When OnePlus revealed the asking price for their new smartphone we were all shocked. Priced at just £199, the X has set a new standard for budget smartphones. For that sum of money, you are getting a great package.
