OnePlus released their budget device the OnePlus X a couple of days ago. The specifications are very similar to last year's OnePlus One, so what is different?

The biggest difference between these two devices is the design. The new Oneplus X uses a metal & glass combination giving it a premium, attractive and luxurious feel in the hand. The OnePlus one, on the other hand, uses a plastic casing coated with sandstone material (for the 64GB model) which gives it a textured feel.

The footprint of the OnePlus X is considerably smaller than the OnePlus One. That is because the OnePlus X has a 5-inch screen compared to the 5.5-inch panel on the Oneplus One. The X is also noticeably thinner measuring it at only 6.9mm thick compared to the 8.9mm measurement on the OnePlus One.

Under the hood, we have the same internals. That is, the Snapdragon 801 CPU and an Adreno 330 GPU paired with 3GB of RAM. Both devices should perform similarly in real world usage.

The new OnePlus X runs the company's own OS, the near-stock ROM Oxygen OS, which is based on Android Lollipop. The OnePlus One, on the other hand, runs CyanogenMod 12.1, the most popular custom ROM in the world, bringing a host of customization and tweaks.

In the camera department, the X triumphs over the older OnePlus One. Although both have 13MP sensors, the X utilises the new ISOCELL technology meaning, in short, better pictures overall. The Oneplus One does have dual LED flash, something the X lacks, having only one. Also, the OnePlus One is able to shoot in 4K resolution out the box while the X can only record at 1080p.

The OnePlus One has a considerably larger battery. The X has a 2525mAh rated unit compared to the larger 3100mAh. Theoretically, the OnePlus One should have better battery performance, but we have to see how the X performs.

The OnePlus X is indeed very similar to the OnePlus One. In fact, it is essentially a OnePlus One with a smaller screen and a premium shell...
