The two most popular small action cameras shaped in a cube dive headfirst into a patent infringement lawsuit, according to The Wallstreet Journal. The original patent for the small action camera was first given to Polaroid for the Polaroid Cube back in May of this year. However, the patent only describes the overall design of the cube via illustrations. Additionally, the Polaroid Cube is almost two years old while GoPro's Hero 4 Session was just announced earlier this year in July.
The lawsuit only covers the Polaroid Cube camera, and not Polaroid itself, as C&A marketing is the company who is manufacturing the camera. C&A Marketing owns the actual patent for the cube, and they are asking for a halt of sales on the GoPro Hero 4 Session, as well as monetary damages that include all of the Hero 4's profits.
GoPro is battling the claim by stating that they have been working on patents for the cube camera design long before the actual Polaroid Cube was announced. According to CNBC, GoPro has submitted the design patent for the Session in the European Union, and applied for the US design patent one day after Polaroid submitted the patent for the cube. Both GoPro and Polaroid have not responded to the lawsuit.
