Tech leaders unite to develop clean energy sources
Tech wizards, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg have come together to introduce a new global initiative aimed at raising investment in cleaner energy sources.
The creator of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg, announced the launch of the campaign ‘Breakthrough Energy Coalition’ on his social network site’s page a few days ago. It’s related to this week’s Paris COP21 climate change conference, where world leaders discuss and reach an agreement on the issues of climate change and global temperatures. Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, are launching the global initiative with Microsoft’s founder, Bill Gates. Examples of other members included are Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, and Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin.
Another campaign that Bill Gates and US President Barack Obama have launched is known as ‘Mission Innovation’ which intends to increase the amount of public investment (from $10 billion to $20 billion) in research for renewable energy sources in the next couple of years. About nineteen governments – such as USA, China and India already support the program.
Both of these campaigns will collaborate with participating nations in order to create "large funding commitments for basic and applied research." Additionally, the coalition will also concentrate its investments on "early stage companies that have the potential of an energy future that produces near zero carbon emissions and provides everyone with affordable, reliable energy."
Zuckerberg stated on his Facebook page; "We won't be able to make meaningful progress on other challenges — like educating or connecting the world — without secure energy and a stable climate. Yet progress towards a sustainable energy system is too slow, and the current system doesn't encourage the kind of innovation that will get us there faster."
