Chinese researchers invent brain-controlled car

Chinese researchers have just proved we are living in the future by creating a car that can be controlled with your mind. The research team from The Nankai University have used EEG signals to allow drivers to use their vehicles without having to move.

This sounds like something that would exist in the future, but it actually exists. The driver wears a headpiece with 16 sensors that can detect electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. Those signals are then wirelessly sent to an on-board computer on the car which translates the driver’s aim. Zhang Zhao, a Reuters researcher, announced in a demonstration, that the vehicle could move forward, put into reverse, stop, and lock/unlock the car without moving any part of his body.

This is certainly a very cool part of technology. Associate Professor Duan Feng led the project and explained the capabilities his team are developing are supposed to be used with driverless cars. Google’s Self Driving Cars will control the navigation and the brain signal will be used for the driver to control the vehicle and steering.

This project is still at the beginning and there aren’t any plans for production at this stage because the vehicles still can’t turn. This technology is very new, but we might see it come to vehicles in the near future.

What do you think of the brain-controlled vehicles? Do you think we can see them in cars in the next 30 years?
