YouTube will soon support HDR video
Netflix, Amazon and other motion picture studios have already confirmed they will be supporting HDR video, and now YouTube has jumped onboard and will soon support HDR video as well. High Dynamic Range videos will have the same advantages as it does in photos. It allows photos and videos to have a contrast ratio and wider dynamic range for colours.
YouTube's chief business officer, Robert Kyncl confirmed it with the CEO of GoPro, Nick Woodman and Chris Milk from VRSE in a keynote on 360 video and virtual reality and CES 2016.
You'll be able to watch HDR videos soon from companies like Warner Bros, Sony Pictures, Netflix, Amazon and Universal Studios have already signed up to use Dolby Vision HDR technology.
More than half of YouTube videos are watched on phones and tablets, and that's where the biggest difference is between the studios and services. The studios' videos seem to be living room-based or viewed on a TV.
These advantages won't be coming to smartphones anytime soon, though. You'll need a TV that has a screen that supports HDR to watch these new videos. It is supported on some new 4K TVs and computer screens, but we might not see it come to smartphones for a while.
When it does eventually become available to smartphones, you'll be able to receive the benefits of HDR photography on your smartphone as well. Once it does happen, it will only be a short time before Android and app developers start to use the increase of dynamic range, just like they have done with high-resolution screens.
Dolby Vison requires very bright screens and smartphones are nowhere near that level. Dolby Vision has a range of 0 to 10,000 nits and smartphones are still trying to tackle the 1,000 nits barrier.
