LG G5 Rumour Roundup

With MWC just around the corner, the rumours surrounding device announcements are going into overdrive, especially ones regarding LG's next flagship, the G5. We've been hearing rumours for some time now, but the latest ones seem pretty promising, so here is a roundup of all rumours regarding the LG G5.

Design

Design is perhaps one of the most important aspects of a device from a consumer's point of view. Many rumours are pointing towards a unibody aluminium design, which would be a first from LG, considering that, up until now, the company has stuck with its removable rear covers made from either plastic or leather.

In most cases, having a unibody design means the removable battery will be a thing of the past, but one very interesting rumour states that the company has managed to keep the removable battery, along with the new design. The company has allegedly built a magic slot into the bottom of the device, which would allow users to slide the battery out of the device and replace it with a fully charged one. If true, this will surely be a big win for both consumers and the company.

Another expected change in the design department is the overall size of the device. The company is expected to produce a more compact design, something that would probably be welcomed by most consumers. The company is expected to achieve this by trimming the top and bottom levels.

Specs

Most sources claim that there will be a large 5.5-inch display, the same size as the G3 and G4, but, this time, it's expected to be a 4K panel, instead of the Quad-HD one we have become accustomed to. If this rumour turns out to be true, the G5 would have on of the sharpest panels around, meaning it would be brilliant for VR gaming, though it would remain to be seen if LG can make this work on the battery front.

As well as the 5.5-inch display, the company is also expected to include a secondary ticker-screen, similar to the one featured on the LG V10. The screen is meant to display notifications such as the weather, time, and date, and can even launch the camera or quick settings without having the main display turned on.

On the inside, the new Snapdragon 820 is expected, which would mean a significant upgrade over the G4's Snapdragon 808, alongside either 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. As well as this, a fingerprint sensor is expected and possibly even an iris scanner, which would be a very interesting addition to the device, though its best to take this one with a big grain of salt.

Regarding the camera sensors, a dual 20MP custom Sony sensor is expected on the rear, which would allow you to take wide angle shots, along with phase-detection autofocus, OIS and a dual-LED flash. On the front, an 8MP selfie sensor is expected, possibly coupled with an LED flash.

Software

It's not an unknown fact that LG doesn't have the best software around. LG's custom UI is relatively slow, and sometimes even lags on high-end devices. With the LG G5, the company is expected to remove a lot of the bloatware from its UI, in the hope of speeding up its devices, which, until now, have lagged compared to the competition.

Release Date

Traditionally, LG has allowed Samsung and HTC to release their flagship devices a couple of months before introducing the next gen of the G series, which has probably hurt LG's sales over time. This time round though, the company has confirmed plans to introduce the G5 two months earlier than usual, in the hope of stealing its competitors market share.

The company has announced a press conference to be held in Barcelona on February 21, one day before MWC officially starts, and they have confirmed that they will be launching their new G series flagship, expected to be called the G5.

Considering the announcement date, it's highly likely that the device will be made available to consumers towards the end of March.

As with all rumours, be sure to take them with a grain of salt. What do you think of all the rumours surounding the G5? Let us know in the comments below!
