Microsoft to unveil "last Lumia" on February 1st

The future of Microsoft's own efforts to produce Windows-powered smartphones is still relatively unclear. After writing off nearly $7.6 billion last year from its Nokia deal, Microsoft revealed that it would be introducing a "more effective phone portfolio." Since then, we've seen the launch of the company's first flagships, the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL, and, more recently, the launch of a low-end alternative, the Lumia 550. The company's lineup could be about to expand though.

Windows Central reports that Microsoft will unveil its next Lumia, the Lumia 650, on February 1st, with very little fanfare. The device is reportedly a business-focused device, with a 5-inch display, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage, and an 8MP camera, therefore making it a budget Windows 10 phone.

The fact that this is a budget phone isn't the interesting part though. The device will allegedly be Microsoft's last ever Lumia device, with the company now investing all its focus and resources into the rumoured "Surface Phone". If the rumour is true, the use of the Lumia brand could come to an end as early as this year, thus eliminating nearly every last tie with what was previosuly known as Nokia and with all devices under the Lumia name.

Microsoft's Surface chief has previously indicated that the company wants a consistent design across all devices, what wasn't made clear though, was if this also meant a consistent branding scheme, in this case, the Surface brand.

Either way, if Microsoft does end up producing a Surface phone, it's sure to impress and there's a slim chance we may even see it announced before the year is out. What do you think of the current rumours surrounding Microsoft's branding plans? Let us know in the comments below!
