Emoji Update: Selfie, facepalm and more to arrive in Unicode 9.0
As you may remember, the last emoji Unicode update was a big one, and the next one, expected to be released in June 2016, is expected to be no different. Unicode 9.0 is expected to include a considerable 74 new emojis, which, though not quite as big as last year's update, is still a very respectable number.
The new emojis are "based on popular request, gender-matching pairs, and compatibility with emoticons in existing platforms". Most of the emojis in the picture above will be approved, but take into account that maybe not all will, and, even if they do, it doesn't mean they will be available straight away on your iOS or Android devices - iOS users should expect to see these emojis once iOS 10 (Or iOS X) launches, but, unfortunately for Android, it could be a lengthy wait if the past is anything to go by.
Anyhow, let's get to the interesting part and see what emojis are actually being considered. First, there are a number of new food-related emojis, such as bacon, a carrot, a baguette and a pickle. Then there's a large collection of animal-themed emojis coming our way, in the form of a rhino, gecko, gorilla, deer, butterfly, shark, bat, and a bald eagle emoji. Aside from these, there are also a few additions to sports and activities, such as emojis for handball, wrestling, water polo, gymnastics and even fencing.
Finally though, there are a number of additions to human emojis, such as a facepalm emoji, a Kim Kardashian-like selfie emoji, a clown one and a pregnant woman. Also making appearances are two new sickly emojis, a fingers-crossed emoji, a brofist and a handshake one.
