Leica announces a new, waterproof camera
Chances are, if you have had a Leica camera before, you've kept it far, far away from anything that has to do with water. Well, Leica has a new camera that will allow you to use it around water without you damaging it. The Leica X-U is their new waterproof, shatterproof camera that costs under $3,000USD, making it their most affordable prosumer DSLR yet.
The camera can be submerged underwater up to 49 feet deep. It is also winterized and dust-sealed, meaning you can take it almost everywhere. There is a 16.5-megapixel APS-C sensor on board, with a fixed Leica Summilux 23mm lens attached, that has an f1.7 aperture. The X-U can also record 1080p HD video at 30 frames a second. It is important to note that there is no viewfinder on board, so you would be using the 3-inch LCD screen that is found on the back.
Those $3,000 dollars doesn't all go to the internals, however. You are also paying for the design, which is evident on this device. The X-U has some design cues from their other camera, the Leica T. Interestingly, Leica has used Audi's design team to come up with the design. The flash is on top of the lens, instead on the unit itself. The top plate and dials are all made out of aluminum, and the body is covered in an anti-sip thermoplastic elastomer material. The buttons are also integrated into the camera's body, and there is a protective cover covering the display. Additionally, the battery and memory card slots are covered by a double locking system.
The Leica X-U will be available at Leica stores and Dealers by the end of January for the price of $2,950USD, or roughly $3,000 after tax.
