Microsoft may be about to embed secondary screens into flip covers
If you are a fan of Microsoft’s mobile devices and quite like the idea of having two screens available at a given time, you may be in luck. The latest report claims that Microsoft’s research division is working with the Lumia division to produce a new type of flip cover, one with always-on displays.
These displays would be low-power ones, most likely using e-ink technology, and would be roughly the same size as the one featured on the device it accompanies. These secondary screens would come with a number of possible uses such as acting as a full QWERTY keyboard, displaying notifications with more detail or even simply work alongside other apps to make your experience easier, such as showing the calendar or browser while you are composing an email. The uses are really endless.
If true, Microsoft wouldn’t be the first company to make use of these secondary screens though. Russian company YotaPhone already has smartphones with secondary e-ink displays, though their approach is slightly different to Microsoft's – the secondary display is actually embedded on the rear of the phone, whereas Microsoft’s is embedded in the flip cover.
As mentioned, the research division of Microsoft is reportedly in “deep talks” with the device division in the hope of turning what is currently an idea, into a real product. Unfortunately for consumers though, there’s no way of knowing when these covers are actually going to be released or even created.
