Is this the final design of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge? (Updated)

Rumours surrounding the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge have been going strong for the last few months, but actual leaks started appearing last month. Up until very recently, it was thought that the S7 and S7 edge would be launched alongside two larger versions, known as the Galaxy S7+ and S7 Edge+, but a few days ago these rumours were shot down by claims that the latter devices had been cancelled or, at least, delayed indefinitely.

Now though, serial leaker Evan Blass – known as @evleaks on Twitter – appears to have further confirmed the cancellation of the “Plus” variants by releasing the first alleged press renders of the soon to be announced S7 and S7 Edge.

The images appear to show a design that largely complies with many of the leaks and rumours we’ve heard about so far, but there are a few questionable details about them.

Many of you may look at the picture seen to the right and think it looks completely legit, but if you look at it with a bit more detail, you will notice that there’s something odd about the Home button, especially on the Galaxy S7 model (left).

The button appears to be slightly deformed on the bottom, making it look like the button is bigger on one side than the other. The button isn’t the only questionable detail, the front camera sensor on the S7 Edge (right) looks to be somewhat larger than the one featured on the S7, which is odd, considering both are expected to feature the same sensor.

Not all is sceptical though. The device appears to come in a pure black colour, which is goes along with reports we’ve seen about a pure black colour. Furthermore, the wallpaper also seems to go along with ones we’ve seen over the past year, in contrast to the bright, artistic ones that were created in previous years. Lastly though, the clock that appears on-screen is set for 12:45 on February 21st, which so happens to be the day before MWC commences and the day the announcement is expect to take place.

The conclusion for this picture is that it could either be a very early press render for the device, considering the odd deformations mentioned previously, or a simple Photoshop mock-up, though it remains to be seen why somebody would go to such great lengths to create a fake.

With this second picture, the front cameras now appear to be of the same size, and even the home button doesn’t look deformed, suggesting, at first, that this may be a press render a slightly newer press render than the other. There is one detail that doesn’t go along with the leaks though. It appears as though the device sports a standard micro-USB port, rather than the rumoured USB-C port, which is largely expected to become the new norm.

Next up, is this third render, this time of the rear though, and it depicts a design that is relatively identical to that of the S6. The slightly more rounded corners are perhaps more noticeable from this angle and it also appears as if Samsung has rounded off the sides of the rear a bit more, most likely in the hope of improving grip and comfort when in someones hands.

Aside from these changes, it appears that the only other noticeable change is a slightly modified camera sensor shape, though even this is still very minimal, at least in shape anyway.

As can be seen in the photo below, it appears that, although the shape won't be modified much, the camera hump will be significantly decreased. This is likely due to two factors, the first being that the device will reportedly feature a larger battery, therefore resulting in a slightly thicker body and minimizing the overhang of the camera sensor. The second is that the the sensor will be a 12MP one, instead of 16MP like the S6's, so the thickness of the sensor itself will most likely be reduced.

If this does turn out to be the final design, it appears Samsung is once again using the strategy of “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” with very minimal design changes other than slightly more rounded corners, a squarer home button and some changes on the rear. Hopefully with the Galaxy S8 the company will switch it up again. After all, it’s been proven countless times that reusing a design more than twice doesn’t tend to work, the most recent example being the HTC One M9.

In conclusion though, despite the professional looking renders, it’s clear that there are some questionable details about them, so, as with any leak or rumour, be sure to take these renders with a grain of salt.
