Sony's new 4K HDR TV's have super-thin bezels
The 4K HDR OLED TV madness just won't stop at CES 2016, as Sony has now joined the party by announcing three new 4K TV's with HDR support.
The first two new TV's are the Sony XBR-X940 series and the XBR-X930D series, which come in screen sizes of 65-inch and 55-inch models. Both of them come with ultra-thin bezels alongside Sony's Triliminous display and Google's Android TV interface. What makes the TV's name confusing is the fact that Sony is marketing these TV's as 4K HDR Ultra HD, instead of something simpler.
Sony's XBR-X930D includes grid-array local-dimming technology that Sony calls Slim Backlight Drive, which allows them to create thinner bezels without decreasing proper backlight distribution. Combining this with their X-tended Dynamic Range Pro technology, Sony is claiming that their TV can produce deeper blacks and more vibrant colors than what standard HDR TV's can accomplish now.
The only downside to both 4K and HDR content, almost nobody supports both formats. Well, Sony is making it easier as they are launching a new app called Ultra, which would allow the user to purchase and stream 4K HDR content from Sony Pictures, right on your new Sony 4K HDR TV that run's Android TV. Ultra will launch sometime later this year with a starting point of 40 to 50 titles.
Sony also announced their slight;y-cheaper model, the XBR-X850D series which comes in 55-inch, 65-inch, and 85-inch models. The TV's still have the 4K UHD support with Sony's Triluminous display and Android TV, but it doesn't have their X-tended Dynamic Pro Range feature.
