Mozilla's Firefox OS lives on Panasonic's new TV's

Mozilla recently quit developing their Firefox OS for smartphones, but now it comes back to life on smart TV's, as Mozilla announced that their open-source operating system will be installed on a pair of Panasonic's new UHD TV's, which were announced at CES earlier this week. The 58-inch and 65-inch models of the DX900s TV will use Firefox OS's "quick access" start screen, which lets users pin their favorite apps, channels, and devices to the home screen. In a future update that will happen sometime later this year, users will also be able to save web apps directly to their TV.

Panasonic also announced models last spring that uses Mozilla's Firefox OS, but this shows that Mozilla is still supporting their almost-dead open-source operating system. Mozilla also hints of delivering their OS "across connected devices" in their press release, further adding confirmation to leaked reports that claim Mozilla will release their Firefox OS on miniature PCs and HDMI sticks. We'll see if this is proven true at a later date. Stay tuned to TechDependent for more CES 2016 coverage. To see all of our coverage, use the CES 2016 category and/or tags.
