Samsung's new soundbar releases sound above you
Surround sound is a nice addition to have whether or not you're watching an action movie or just chilling on the couch. However, there are a lot of speakers and cables involved with getting a true surround sound system. And that only increases if you want to have a Dolby Atmos system that includes "3D" sound. Of course, there are all-in-one soundbars that give you some basic surround sound without the hassle. Now, Samsung is converging Dolby Atmos surround sound in a soundbar with the new HW-K950.
How Dolby Atmos works is by putting speakers above you with either ceiling-mounted or upward firing speakers. This technique is often found in fancier cinemas, as well. Samsung's soundbar has four upward-firing speakers that will produce sound waves that will bounce off of the ceiling. In addition, there are two additional surrounds, or speakers that connect to the soundbar. Those two speakers, subwoofer and the soundbar send sound out both vertically and laterally. Thus, achieving a 5.1 Surround Sound system as well as Dolby Atmos sound. The wireless surrounds connect to the soundbar wirelessly, so there shouldn't be a huge cable mess or hassle to set everything up. There is one downside to the Atmos surround sound system, only a couple dozen of Blu-Rays systems support the system so far, and only a few streaming services support it as well, Netflix, Vudu and Hulu. There is hope however, If you have a 5.1 or 7.1 system, just replace your rear surrounds with upward-firing speakers and you'll have Atmos support.
