Apple's CarPlay and Android Auto are coming to Ford cars

Apple's Android Auto and Android Auto are becoming more and more popular in the automotive infotainment world, and that is soon to become more popular as Ford has announced that all of their 2017 cars will have both Android Auto and CarPlay support.

As mentioned above, the availability would be for all 2017 models with Ford's in-house Sync 3 infotainment system. But people who have a 2016 model would get an upgrade "later in the year." Ford's 2017 Escape will be the first with both systems, which will go on sale in the spring. Additionally, the Escape is Ford's first model with the Sync Connect system, which would bring LTE connectivity into the car. It is important to mention that other vehicles with the Sync 3 system will be getting LTE connectivity later this year.

Ford is advocating their AppLink platform this year at CES, suggesting that they haven't given up on that platform just yet even though both Android Auto and CarPlay are becoming more and more popular. AppLink now has the permission to access vehicle data directly, and several apps will be coming to the platform later this year that will eb able to take advantage of that. Some of them include AAA and Concur, which logs vehicle mileage automatically. The more open version of AppLink, called SmartDeviceLink is being invesitagated by Toyota to be used as a possible in-car app platform, as well.
