Honeywell's new thermostat has HomeKit compatibility

Honeywell first released their Lyric smart thermostat to battle the Nest thermostat a couple of years ago, and now they're back at CES 2016 to release a updated version with Apple's HomeKit support. The new version is now available to preorder for $249.99, and should be released in stores sometime around February 1st.

Both the Lyric and the Nest thermostats have standalone applications both on Android and iOS that allows the user to remotely control the temperature, and both alerts the user when the system needs maintenance, and automatically tell the thermostat when the user is home and away from home. Now, with the HomeKit support, the Lyric can now be added and integrated with other smart home products. Some examples of this could include setting up air monitors to tell the thermostat whether or not to turn on or off the A/C or heater, or using the thermostat to tell the house lights to shut off when you set the thermostat to away. For users who use Samsung's SmartThings hub, the Lyric will still continue to work with the service.

Adding HomeKit to the Lyric gives the upper hand to Honeywell, as Nest is owned by Google and is not willing to join Apple's HomeKit initiative. While there are other HomeKit enabled smart thermostats available today, most don't look as nice as the Lyric. Stay tuned to TechDependent for all of our CES 2016 coverage.
