Lenovo's new ThinkPad X1 has some useful features

Alongside launching their new ThinkPad Chromebook 13 here at CES this week, Lenovo also announced their new ThinkPad X1 tablet, which is a pretty powerful Windows 10 tablet with some useful additional features. The ThinkPad X1 will come with a 12-inch display and an Intel Core m7 processor.

What makes the X1 different from the rest of the Windows 10 tablets on the market today is the fact that it comes with three different "modules" that attaches to the tablet to give it additional features. The modules look similar to battery packs, and the "productivity" module extends the battery life for five additional hours as well as adding HDMI and USB ports.

Lenovo also has a "presenter" module which includes a pico projector that can project an image up to 60-inches. The final module includes Intel's RelSense camera for the user to capture and edit objects for 3D printing with their hands. This type of technology has been found on laptops and even desktops, but we haven't seen it on tablets just yet. However, according to The Verge, the modules are very tricky to attach in the sense that you'll have to peel off a case that covers the ports for the connectors for the module. And attaching the modules to the tablet requires some latch to ensure that they'll attach securely. Which can be a bit troublesome for regular use. Lenovo is also selling a keyboard case that also includes a kickstand, which is the full traditional Lenovo style keyboard and trackpad. There is also an active stylus that you can use for the ThinkPad X1, although it is optional and it costs $50.

The additional modules unfortunately won't come bundled with the tablet. Starting price for the additional battery module or the 3D camera will start at $149, while the pico projector module will cost $279. Lenovo plans to launch the ThinkPad X1 tablet in February for a base price of $899. So all together with the modules the X1 tablet will cost you more than $1000.
