Microsoft announces their new app, News Pro
Microsoft has built their own experimental app development group, called Microsoft Garage, and they are releasing a new app called News Pro. The app is similar to Apple's News app offering as well as other apps such as Flipboard. To log in, all you need is either a Facebook or LinkedIn account. Once logged in, you can choose from a wide range of topics, such as finance, tech and design plus more that is algorithmically chosen for a better mobile-friendly reading format. There is a highlights section, as well that lets you check out top stories of the day. There is also an explore tab that allows you to check out new sections that are organised by industry, organizations, skills and products.
The News Pro app utilises either your Facebook or LinkedIn information to incorporate what topics you are interested in. Based on what you like, it will subscribe you to certain sections. For example, if you like some technology pages, (like TechDependent) it will subscribe you to the technology section.
Microsoft already confirmed that this app won't make it's way to either Android or Windows 10 Mobile, which is often popular for their Garage apps, as they are made by several company employees. In fact, most of them have been one-off projects and is often forgotten within a few weeks of announcement. It is important to note that their web app works on any device, so it is perfect for desktop use. Microsoft's News Pro app is shaping up to be a great alternative to Apple's own News app or Flipboard if they aren't the thing for you.
