Samsung patents an interesting smartwatch security feature

The battle for the ultimate smartwatch is getting harder as Apple and Samsung are regularly patenting potential designs for the future. This time, Samsung appears to be taking a shot and has registered a patent that indicates how its future smartwatches could recognise a users identity by scanning the veins in their hands.

Samsung’s new patent was filed in the summer of 2015 and published earlier this month, and reveals a number of details regarding how the potential technology could operate.

The body of the smartwatch will contain a built-in infrared light utility that will allow the camera to view and register the veins in the back of a user’s hand. The device will then utilise this information for security purposes, in order to authenticate the user’s identity for a wide-range of applications and services that can then be used within the smartwatch or paired devices, such as smartphones or tablets.

Instead of using a pin, password, or pattern to pass the login stages of an app, service, or website, the smartwatch can simply scan the users veins and grant access to the user.

The technology won't be restricted to just one user. In fact, multiple users will be abe to scan their veins into the smartwatch and store their data on it for future use, allowing the owner to share the device freely with others withough having to worry about their data being deleted.

As of now, this is just a patent, though it's highly likely that Samsung is already developing prototype devices in the hope of eventually relesing a consumer-ready product.
