SwiftKey gets acquired by Microsoft

Microsoft recently confirmed that they have acquired the popular third-party keyboard app, called SwiftKey, after a report from The Financial Times. Microsoft is planning on continuing to develop the app for both iOS and Android, however. It important to note that Microsoft has their own keyboard app, called flow, which is supposedly making it's way to iOS soon. Those plans could change, however as they are planning on integrating some of SwiftKey's features into Flow keyboard for Windows.

The acquisition goes much further than just combining features together, as SwiftKey's team will join Microsoft's research team, where they will collaborate on SwiftKey's Artificial Intelligence software that is included on their Android version. "We love SwiftKey's technology and we love the team that Jon and Ben have formed," according to Harry Shum, who is the head of Research at Microsoft. He later went on to say that "We believe that together we can achieve orders of magnitude greater scale than either of us could have achieved independently."

You may or may not recall that Microsoft acquired Sunrise calendar and Acompli last year, and they have joined Microsoft's Garage team, where they have been producing a number of apps for both Android and iOS. The latest acquisition of SwiftKey proves the point that Microsoft is looking to provide their services on both the two major mobile platforms.
