Alcatel has become the first smartphone manufacturer to announce its latest mobile offerings at MWC, specifically two new devices with very premium designs, the new Alcatel Idol 4 and Idol 4S.
Both devices are definitely one of the company’s best looking devices ever and feature overall modest internals as they are aimed at budget-conscious buyers, unlike the Galaxy S7 or LG G5.
Design and Display

Design wise, they are one of the company’s best offering ever, with a very sleek blend of glass and aluminium metal. The front panel of the device presents an extremely simplistic design with slim bezels on either side of the display. On both the top and bottom of the display, rather large glass bezels are present, with the top one housing the front-facing camera and proximity sensor. The whole panel itself features a wraparound aluminium frame that provides an extra lip at the bottom and top of the device, allowing for two powerful stereo speakers. The aluminium frame also features the volume and power buttons on the right side of the device, with the latter looking a lot like the power button featured on Sony’s Xperia line up until the recent launch of the Xperia Z5. Regarding the rear, it appears to take some inspiration from the Galaxy S6 line, with the glass appearing to curve into the frame slightly towards the edges, though it does not feature the large camera hump which we became accustomed to in 2015. Instead, a smaller camera sensor is positioned towards the top left corner with the flash sitting directly underneath it. The devices weigh in at 130g for the Idol 4 and 149g for the Idol 4S, while they are just 7.1 and 7mm thin respectively. Both devices will be made available in four different colour options, specifically Gold, Dark Gray, Rose Gold and Metal Silver.
Regarding displays, the Idol 4S features a large 5.5-inch display with an impressive 1440x 2560p resolution. The Idol 4, on the other hand, features a slightly smaller 5.2-inch display with a lower 1080x1920p resolution.
Processor and Memory
First up, the Idol 4S which features an octa-core Snapdragon 652 processor, alongside the Adreno 510 GPU and 3GB of RAM. Regarding internal storage, 32GB will be available, though this can be expanded via a microSD of up to 200GB.
The Idol 4, on the other hand, features an octa-core Snapdragon 617 along with the Adreno 405 GPU, either 2GB or 3GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, though this can be expanded via microSD of up to 200GB.
Camera
The Idol 4 features a 13MP rear camera on the rear with f/2.0. aperture and phase detection autofocus, which is all accompanied by a dual-tone LED flash to accompany it. On the front, an 8MP selfie sensor is featured along with an LED flash.
The Idol 4S is a similar affair in the camera department, though the rear camera features a higher pixel count at 16MP and also features support for 2K video. The selfie sensor remains the same as on the Idol 4.
Additional Features and Software
Both devices feature support for NFC, Bluetooth 4.1 and 4G LTE. They also feature dual stereo speakers and FM Radio. Regarding the battery, the Idol 4 features a 2600mAh battery to keep the lights on, while the Idol 4S features a larger 3000mAh battery.

Moving on to software, both devices come running Android 6.0 Marshmallow straight out of the box with Alcatel’s latest personalized overlay on top.
Price and Release
Alcatel has said that both devices will be made available in Europe and the rest of the world, though they are unlikely to be made available in the US. The Idol 4 will carry a price tag of around $280, while the Idol 4S will cost between $400-500, still significantly lower than most flagships. Finally Alcatel has decided to throw in a little extra for buyers by shipping both devices inside a plastic Google Cardboard VR headset.
