Earlier this week, Domino's unveiled a self-driving robot that can deliver your pizza without any human assistance.
Domino's Robotic Unit (DRU) was developed by the Australian branch in cooperation with Marathon Robotics, a local startup company. Just like Google's self-driving cars, it uses LIDAR sensors with GPS-tracking based on Google Maps. It can take shortcuts where cars can't and it can also avoid obstacles.
The DRU's food compartment stays locked while making its way to its destination so no one can steal the pizza. Once it reaches its destination, you'll need a special code to unlock the compartment and get your food. Once you've done that, another special compartment will rise from the head of the robot and display separate heated and cooled spaces.
The DRU will be first tested in New Zeland and Domino's is also working with the local government to set up areas where the DRU can be used. If this initial trial is successful we may see robots delivering pizza all over the world.
