Huawei P9 and P9 Plus now official with dual Leica cameras

After a pretty long wait and a number of leaks, Huawei has finally announced its long awaited new flagship, the Huawei P9. The P9 is not the only device the company has announced though, in fact, the company has actually revealed two flagships, the second being the Huawei P9 Plus.

The devices are the successors to last year’s P8, though it’s fair to say that the P9 is more of a direct successor than the Plus. Either way though, both feature similar designs and are equipped with high-end specs, so which one is for you? Keep on reading below and you can decide for yourself.

Design and Display

The design featured on both devices is a natural evolution over the P8’s one, with the same overall rectangular-shape and a similar metallic look with iPhone-like antenna bands wrapped around the back. The front of the devices features a large screen with extremely thin bezels either side and rather large bezels on the top and bottom – The top one houses the in-ear speaker, the proximity sensor and the front-facing camera, while the bottom one features the Huawei logo. Moving on to the rear, the design is near identical to last year’s model, with the main design change being the bar at the top, which now features a slight pattern underneath the glass and two camera sensors, instead of the previous one. Slightly below the camera bar is the fingerprint sensor. Both devices will be made available in a number of colours: Titanium Grey, Mystic Silver, Prestige Gold and Rose Gold, though the regular P9 will also be made available in Ceramic White and Haze Gold.

Regarding the displays, the regular P9 features an average 5.2-inch LCD display with a 1080x1920p resolution, meaning a pixel density of 423ppi. The P9 Plus, on the other hand, features a larger 5.5-inch LCD display, though it comes with the same 1080x1920p resolution, meaning a slightly lower pixel density of 401ppi is featured.

Processor and Memory

Both devices feature Huawei’s latest home-grown processor, the HiSilicon Kirin 955, an octa-core processor composed of four cores clocked at 2.5GHz and further four clocked at 1.8GHz. The processor is accompanied by the Mali-T880 MP4 CPU and a generous 3 or 4GB of RAM. Regarding internal storage, the Huawei P9 is available in either 32 or 64GB models which come with either 3 or 4GB of RAM respectively. For the P9 Plus though, only the 64GB model is available with 4GB of RAM. Either way, if you are unhappy with the amount of storage available, you can further expand it via microSD card.

Camera

This is perhaps the most interesting feature of the devices, as they feature a dual-sensor setup on the rear composed of two 12MP sensor designed in partnership with Leica. Alongside the camera, a dual-tone LED flash is featured as well as phase-detection autofocus and OIS.

On the front, Huawei has equipped the devices with 8MP selfie sensors.

Additional Features and Software

Both flagships come with Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, 4G LTE support, USB Type-C and a fingerprint scanner. Regarding the batteries, the P9 features a generous 3000mAh one, while the P9 Plus features a pretty big 3400mAh battery.

Moving on to software, both devices come running Android 6.0 Marshmallow straight out of the box, along with the latest version of Huawei’s custom Emotion UI overlay on top.

Price and Release

Huawei has confirmed that both devices will be made available starting April 16th across 29 countries, though there has been no mention of U.S. availability as of yet. Regarding pricing, the 32GB/3GB of RAM version of the P9 will set you back €599, while the 64GB/4GB version will cost you €649. The P9 Plus, on the other hand, will be available starting at €749.
