AT&T agrees with Verizon on an $20 upgrade fee
Earlier this month, Verizon said that they are going to start charging costumers a $20 upgrade fee when they purchase a new phone, either at full price or on the carriers monthly installment plan. And now AT&T is doing the same thing.
However, AT&T previously had a $15 dollar upgrade fee, but they have upgraded the price to $20, to match Verizon, according to Droid Life. Additionally, the fee only applies to any phone bought to the carrier, such as unlocked devices that are not sold directly through AT&T itself. The fee also applies to any device purchased on AT&T's payment plan. Furthermore, business customers that opt into a two-year agreement will have to pay a $45 fee.
The difference between Verizon's and AT&T's fee is that if you opt to pay the phone in full up front, AT&T will not charge you. However, that means you're paying for the phone in full at once, which can cost roughly $600 and up. Interestingly, T-Mobile is the last of the four major US carriers to not have a upgrade fee when upgrading to a new phone on a payment plan.
