HTC brings back the One name with new mid-range One S9

With the launch of the HTC 10, many thought that the HTC One name was well and truly gone, but today HTC proved us wrong with the launch of its latest mid-range device, the HTC One S9.

Design and Display

At first glance, the design looks to be yet another evolution of the one introduced with the One A9, that is, at least, until we take a look at the back of the device.

The device is essentially a One M9 with a newly designed front. The front of the device features the glass panel we have become accustomed to with the company’s latest device, along with two front-facing speakers and a large front-facing camera. The rear, on the other hand, is constructed from the same brushed aluminium as the One M9 and features the same large square-shaped camera in the middle, with the HTC logo sitting directly in the centre. The new-ish device actually weighs slightly more than the One M9 at 158g and is also thicker at 10.1mm. The device will be made available in a two colour choices; Silver and Gold.

Regarding the display, the device is fitted with the same 5-inch display, that has a 1080x1920p resolution and a pixel density of 441ppi.

Processor and Memory

Moving on to the inside, this is perhaps where things aren’t as comparable with the M9. The device is powered by an octa-core Mediatek MT6795 Helio X10 processor, which is paired with 2GB of DDR4 RAM and the PowerVR G6200 GPU. Regarding internal storage, 16GB is available which can be further expanded via microSD if you feel that 16GB isn’t quite enough.

Camera

On the rear, HTC has equipped the device with a new 13MP sensor that is coupled with a dual-tone flash and OIS, while on the front is a 4MP-UltraPixel camera, just like the one seen on the front of last year’s M9.

Additional Features and Software

The device includes various other features such as Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, LTE connectivity (Up to 300mbps) and a 2840mAh battery to keep the device powered.

Regarding software, the device comes running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow straight out of the box with HTC’s minimal Sense overlay on top.

Price and Release

HTC has revealed that the device will be made available in Germany first, with other European countries receiving the device shortly after. The device will be made available starting at €499, which means it is being marketed as a premium mid-range device, possibly one that could compete with Sony’s new Xperia X line.
