Microsoft Flow is Redmond’s own IFTTT

For those who haven’t heard of IFTTT (If This Then That), it is an online service that allows a user to create conditional statements called “recipes” for automation across many web-based services and devices.

If for example a picture got posted on the Pinterest board, an IFTTT recipe could be set up to automatically send a mail to a particular mail address; another recipe could save a copy of all new photos taken on your phone to Dropbox. The service has gained so many fans since its launch in 2011 due to its ease of use and usefulness.

Microsoft has launched its own version of IFTTT called Flow. This aims to automate operations across various web services including Microsoft’s own Office 365 and One Drive. A user can, for example, get text notifications when an important email gets into the inbox.

At first glance, this service might seem to be geared towards businesses and teams rather than individuals but it may be as useful for everyone. The service went live this morning and signing up is free but a work or school email address is needed to sign up, which hopefully won't be the case in the near future.
