Google's self-driving car could be soon "graduating"
Tech giant Google has been working on self-driving cars for a long while now, and it's good news that their autonomous cars are very close to “graduating” from their secretive X lab. Astro Teller, the head of Google's X labs, has stated that the self-driving cars are on the brink of leaving the experimenting stages and becoming a final product.
However, it is still unclear as to what character the self-driving tech would be. This is because Google has previously designed and built a few of its own vehicles to operate the technology, but let's not forget that Google could also potentially choose to sell and distribute the technology to third-party manufacturers.
Another drawback before we might see these cars on our streets is that there is likely to be quite a long time before the cars fully-legal in enough places worldwide in order for the cars to be a proper business opportunity for Google. Looking on the bright side, as a starter for the self-driving cars, they could be used in taxi fleets on private areas such as business or university campuses where fewer restrictions apply and/or legal enforcement may be a barrier.
At the current time, Google is reported to be discussing a possible partnership with Fiat Chrysler regarding the technology. Expanding on the self-driving technology aspect; it is slowly becoming a concentrated industry. Companies like Uber and Tesla are both in the garage working on it, while others such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are still browsing and cooking up ideas for the future.
