LG wants to ditch the fingerprint sensor

From the first fingerprint-enabled smartphone, the Atrix to the iPhone 5s and then basically all new flagships being released, the fingerprint scanner is proving to be one of the most wanted and critical features of a modern smartphone. Apart from the added layer of security(think mobile payments), most fingerprint readers provide ease in unlocking phones. The accuracy of these scanners varied across devices but we can agree that lately most scanners are quick and handy. The common design for every fingerprint scanner appears to be a dedicated scanner or button but that is where a recent development by LG comes into play. LG has embedded the scanner in the touchscreen display.

LG Innotek is an independent manufacturing company associated with LG Electronics. It is dedicated to the research and development of various materials and components, producing innovative products for the technology market. LG Innotek's fingerprint scanner has now been embedded in the screen of a touchscreen display. According to them:

“LG Innotek cut a shallow furrow of 0.01inches (0.3mm) thick on the lower backside of the cover glass and installed the fingerprint sensor inside of it with using their supreme precision and combination technology.

With this module, the sensor is not exposed to the outside of the device, so manufacturer can produce a sleek designed smartphone. Fingerprint recognition area also can be indicated by various patterns up to design of complete product.”

This eliminates the need for a dedicated fingerprint scanner button. It also could mean smaller sizes especially for devices with fingerprint scanning buttons on the front side of the device. It should be expected that the new tech would be available on the new LG devices but that does not rule out the fact that it may supply this product to any other firm. What do you think?
