Windows 10 free upgrade offer comes to an end July 29th

If you still have a computer running Windows 7 or 8.1 you better hurry up because you have until July 29th to make the switch over to Windows 10.

Microsoft has confirmed that its free upgrade offer will be coming to an end and that, after that date, the upgrade will no longer be free. In fact, Microsoft will start charging a minimum of $119 to make the move over to Windows 10.

When Microsoft released Windows 10 last year, it already warned us that the upgrade would only be free for the first year for Windows 7 and 8.1 users (XP user had to pay at least $119 to upgrade). The reason for this limited time offer was to get as many users on to Windows 10 as quickly as possible and that plan actually seems to have played out quite well for the company. As of now, there are over 300 million active Windows 10 devices, both new and old.

To many, this number may not mean much, but to Microsoft this means that Windows 10 has the fastest adoption rate of any version of Windows and shows them that Windows 10 is constantly eating away at Windows 7 and 8.1’s user count. But with PC sales continuingly slowing, the pressure is now on Microsoft to find some way of earning money from Windows 10, which means they will have to start charging for the software, much like the company did with Windows 7 and 8.

So if you are a Windows 7 or 8.1 users and have been putting off the upgrade to Windows 10, you may want to rethink your decision or you could end up paying a hefty $119 dollars for the basic Windows 10 Home edition or $199 for the Pro version.
