New Moto G4 line is official: Three devices instead of one

After a number of leaks recently, Motorola has finally announced the new Moto G line, which surprisingly consists of three devices this year. At the reveal though, the company only mentioned the G4 and G4 Plus, with the G4 Play being quietly revealed on the company’s US website.

Design and Display

Design wise, all three devices look very similar with a very simplistic look. The front panels of the devices feature relatively small bezels on either side of the display, though this isn’t the case with the G4 Play, with the in-ear speaker situated above the display and the camera to the right. The main difference when comparing devices is the fingerprint scanner that is featured on the G4 Pus and is situated below the display. Moving on to the rear, the design is identical on all three, with the new camera setup, consisting of the camera and flash in a new vertical position, being the most prominent design element, with the Moto “M” dimple being situated directly underneath. Moving away from the external design though, all three devices are splash resistant, much like last year’s Moto G.

The Moto G4, G4 Plus and G4 Play weigh in at 155g, 155g and 137g and are 9.8mm, 9.8mm and 9.9mm thick respectively. Regarding colour choices, all three devices will be made available in both black and white, though the rear shells are interchangeable.

Moving on to the display, the G4 and G4 Plus both feature the same 5.5-inch display with a 1080x1920p resolution, meaning a pixel density of 401ppi. The G4 Play, on the other hand, features a smaller 5-inch display with a lower 720x1280p resolution, meaning a pixel density of 294ppi.

Processor and Memory

This is perhaps where things get a bit more interesting. Both the G4 and G4 Plus are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 617 processor, while the smaller G4 Play is powered by the Snapdragon 410. The G4’s processor is accompanied by 2GB of RAM, while the G4 Plus’s is accompanied by either 2, 3 or even 4GB of RAM. Finally, the G4 Play comes with either 1 or 2 GB of RAM.

Moving on to internal storage, the G4 comes with either 16 or 32GB of storage, while the G4 Plus comes in 16, 32 and even 64GB configurations. The G4 Play, on the other hand, comes in both 8 and 16GB models. In either case, this can be expanded via microSD.

Camera

The G4 Plus features a pretty generous 16MP sensor accompanied by phase detection and laser autofocus and a dual-LED flash. Regarding the G4, a 13MP sensor is featured on the rear along with a dual-LED flash. Finally, the G4 Play comes with an 8MP sensor coupled with an LED flash.

On the front, all three devices feature a 5MP selfie sensor.

Additional Features and Software

All three devices come with Bluetooth 4.1, NFC and 4G LTE support. Regarding the batteries, the G4 and G4 Plus come with the same non-removable 3000mAh battery, while the G4 Play features a slightly smaller 2800mAh battery.

Regarding software, all three devices come running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow straight out of the box, with Motorola’s extremely minimal modifications on top.

Price and Release

Most countries will see the G4 and G4 Plus released sometime in June, though India is receiving an immediate release of the G4 Plus. The US, on the other hand, will receive all three devices around mid-summer. Other than the US though, it is not currently known which countries will receive the G4 Play. In terms of pricing, Motorola UK has revealed that the G4 will start at £169, while the G4 Plus will start at £199. Unfortunately, no pricing details have been released regarding the G4 Play.
