More Chromebooks than Macbooks sold in 2016

The United States, especially North America has long been a huge market for Apple’s Macbook range of laptops with most users preferring Apple’s range of computers to others. Windows PCs follow next in PC market shares and are very popular worldwide; with the recent free upgrades to Windows 10, there has been a small decline in PC purchases. The advent of powerful smartphones and apps has also reduced the dependence on PCs for everyday work. According to statistics, Lenovo still tops the worldwide market of PCs followed by HP and Dell. Most computer hardware manufacturers, however, are producing PCs running Google’s own Chrome OS leading to an influx of more affordable personal computers worldwide.

Latest reports from International Data Corporation (IDC) have shown that Chromebooks and Chrome OS have outsold Apple’s Mac range of products for the first time in the US. With recent improvements in Chrome OS and its ability to access Play Store apps, it comes as no surprise that the operating system is gaining popularity among people. Due to its budget price, hardware variety and ease of use, Chromebooks seem to appeal to light PC users and students. The report is for the first quarter of 2016 only, therefore, Apple’s Mac may recover some market shares considering back to school sales have not started yet.
