Google and Levi’s team-up to make a jacket that can control your tech

Clothing giant Levi’s and tech giant Google have worked together to finally present a revolutionary new Commuter denim jacket that features built-in smart fabric sensors, empowering it with the ability to control music, accept and reject phone calls, and also respond to messages. But what makes it even more special? You can still chuck it into the washing machine.

Last year, Google unveiled Project Jacquard, where we experienced this type of technology before. This new project is a segment of Google's unique ATAP lab. The scientists in the ATAP lab are utilising an all-new technique of producing textiles to weave electronic sensors and elements into the clothing material. This gives us a sign that "smart clothing" is very close.

At the current time, the technology is reported to recognise simple broad motions. In 2015, ATAP lab introduced a concept jacket that can turn your smartphone screen on after you slide your hand down its sleeve. Breakthroughs like this promise us an exciting future in the wearable tech industry.

Later on this year, Levi’s will be pushing the jacket into beta testing stages, followed by a consumer launch that is expected to happen sometime in 2017. Google have stated that once it is available for the consumer, it will be able to operate alongside apps and services like Google Maps and even third-party software such as Spotify.

There isn't any news on the price tag or the final design and specs, but it will definitely be a trendy aspect of tech for the future. Will you possibly buy this new jacket once it is available? Make sure you comment below and of course connect with any of our social media pages right now!
