Otterbox announces a modular iPhone case

We all know the struggle of putting a case on your phone to help protect it, but ultimately losing the availability to add anything extra on the phone such as a lens kit or even external storage in the process. Thankfully, Otterbox is here to help avoid that scenario with the Universe modular case, which keeps the protection that you'd expect from Otterbox, but also adds the option to add pretty much anything to the case for some extra functionality.

How the case works is pretty simple. There is a slot at the top of the case, and one on the bottom. All you do is slide the accessory into one of the slots, and bam, you're done. However, there are no electronics involved, so you'd either have to connect it through Bluetooth or through the lightning connector.

The major downside to the modular system is that the accessories need to be designed to fit into the Otterbox's proprietary slots. However, Otterbox is a pretty well-known brand, so they might be able to pull something like this off. As of right now, they have eight partners on board such as Square, Olloclip, and SanDisk. Some other accessories that may be included is a battery back, WiFi booster and a Tripod mount.

You'd probably figure this out, but the added accessories are not protected like the phone is. Although, Otterbox is saying that the accessories are built to withstand a fall, if not a couple. They did not specify if they are as tough as the case itself, but it would be pretty useful if they were since you'd probably want to avoid dropping the Olloclip lens accessory.

Interestingly, Otterbox is calling the Universe case as a system, which could imply that it will move to other devices in the future. It is also important to note that the case itself is thin, about the same size as their "summetry" line. Otterbox is implying that it could move to their "Defender" series of cases, which is their top seller.

The Universe case retails for $50 and is available on their website as well as retail stores.
