Snapchat acquires 3D selfie company
We all know Snapchat is probably the best app for selfies. With its range of filters such as the popular dog-face, and features such as face-swap, Snapchat is regularly updating its app as well as expanding its business. Concentrating on the business aspect, the company has now purchased a company that produces 3D selfies.
The 3D selfie company is called Seene, and its app was introduced a few years ago. What it did was scan the user's face and transform it into a 3D model in the user's device. It might seem a bit weird and pointless to me and you, but Snapchat believe that they are making the right decision and developing the technology for us to utilise.
Snapchat is reportedly focusing on the technology and systems that enable Seene to create 3D models - so there could potentially be a lot more involved than just a new filter for selfies.
A big advantage of the technology that Seene operates is that it there isn't any special infrared sensors or a collection of cameras necessary. The only obvious thing that is required is your smartphone's camera. Your smartphone’s processing power will also be utilised in order for the app to create 3D models of selfies all via the smartphone, which makes it more simple and quicker instead of being based online.
At the current time, it isn't clear as to what Snapchat will actually do with this new acquisition, but it is exciting to see what the future potentially holds.
