Synaptics brings USB fingerprint readers

For those unfamiliar with the company Synaptics, it is a human interface solutions developer that brought technology such as touchpads to our notebook PCs back in 1995. The company also makes fingerprint sensors, touch buttons and a host of other interactive technologies for PCs and even mobile device manufacturers. With the increase in the global use of biometric verification and secure online shopping, the need for fingerprint scanners and compliant devices has risen. The manufacturer has announced a FIDO certified device that allows a “Natural ID™ secure fingerprint authentication” on notebook PCs.

Synaptics has introduced yet another innovative device for the PC; the Turnkey is a USB fingerprint sensor that brings biometric features to an otherwise, ordinary computer. There is actually no keys and turning with this device as the small USB dongle fits into any USB port, allowing its software interface to read fingerprints and thus secure the computer. The device integrates with Microsoft Hello and Windows Passport to allow secure logins. A few concerns are being raised as to the efficacy of this technology as criminals may simply take out the USB device and then gain access to PCs through the normal login route or by hacking. Perhaps the device’s only practical use would be for applications and sites that would require only secure biometric logins.
