Lenovo Phab2 Pro is the first commercial Tango phone

Lenovo has finally taken the wraps off of the world’s first commercial Project Tango-enabled phone, the Lenovo Phab2 Pro.

For those of you wondering what that actually means though, Project Tango is essentially a platform that uses a smartphone’s cameras to gain an understanding of its location and surroundings and then to build a three-dimensional map of indoor spaces. Thanks to Project Tango, the Phab2 Pro will be able to measure your rooms and bring improved augmented reality and virtual reality applications.

Aside from the software that Project Tango provides, the most important part of this phone are its cameras. It’s thanks to these cameras that work alongside the software, that the whole experience is possible.

In total the device has four cameras. The first one is your typical front facing camera, which in this case has an 8MP resolution, while the second is a 16MP RGB camera which is situated on the rear. Accompanying the latter are a depth camera and a motion tracking camera with an infrared beamer and a fish-eye lens, all of which allow for the special Tango features.

Moving away from the Tango side of things, the device is premium offering from the company, both in and out.

Looking at the design, the device features a very premium aluminium unibody. The front panel houses the devices large screen with extremely thin bezels either side and two bigger bezels at the top and bottom. Moving on to the rear, the device features the large camera setup along with the fingerprint sensor, all of which are aligned from the centre upwards. Below are the Lenovo and Tango logos. The Phab2 Pro weighs in at a hefty 250g and is 10.7mm thick. Regarding colour choices, the device will be made available in Champagne Gold and Gunmetal Grey.

Regarding the display, the device features a huge 6.4-inch display with a 1440 x 2160p resolution, meaning a pixel density of 459ppi. Moving on to the inside, the device is powered by a Snapdragon 652 processor alongside 4GB of RAM. As well as this, 64GB of internal storage is available, though this can be expanded via microSD.

Other features include Bluetooth 4.1, NFC, a fingerprint scanner, 4G LTE and the ability to record Adobe 5.1 surround sound. Battery wise, the device features a large 4,050 mAh one to keep the lights on.

Regarding software, the device runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow straight out of the box. Finally, this device will be made available this September for $499 and will be sold at Best Buy unlocked.
