The OnePlus 3 is official: flagship specs for $399

There's been a variety of leaks, rumours, and even teasers, but today, the anticipated OnePlus 3 smartphone has been revealed. It's the latest and most powerful smartphone from the Chinese smartphone producer, with the intention to continue the legacy of previous OnePlus smartphones - but this time with even better specs and functionality so it can compete with other flagship devices.

For starters, the design of the OnePlus 3 is somewhat based off its predecessors, considering the fact that it has a 5.5" screen boasting a 1080p AMOLED panel protected by Gorilla Glass 4 (pretty much similar to the OnePlus 2), and also a one-touch fingerprint sensor. A big change this time is that all these aspects are finished-off by a full aluminium body that the smartphone consists of.

Concentrating on the specs, OnePlus are utilising a Snapdragon 820 processor, complemented by 6GB of RAM, and a sensible 64GB of storage space. The rear 16MP camera has been updated from the 13MP of the OnePlus 2, and is now supported by OIS, including full manual camera controls. There's even an 8MP front-facing camera which is also a big step-up from its predecessor.

To ensure that the OnePlus 3 meets a lot of expectations, they've packed in a selection of little specs and details that weren't available on the OnePlus 2. We're talking about a new Dash Charge quick charging system, as well as USB-C for the OnePlus 3's beefy 3000 mAh battery. Users can now enjoy NFC for mobile payments, and even bust a few tunes with the newer and extremely louder speaker. The OnePlus 3 is also compatible with a collection of super slim cases based on the same materials as the OnePlus 2's; remember the well-known signature black sandstone and real wood cases?

Regarding the smartphone's software, OxygenOS has delivered a couple of changes on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. OnePlus have surprisingly this time cut-down on the software and you'll easily notice this when you compare the OnePlus 3 to the OnePlus 2. However, the basic features such as interchangeable hardware elements, software navigation buttons, dark mode, customizable status and notifications bar, as well as quick settings toggles and a wide-range of useful gestures.

One thing that a lot of people are happy with now is that OnePlus has scrapped the original invite system that the company previously utilised to conduct and monitor sales. Now, you can visit the OnePlus official website and purchase the OnePlus 3. If you're interested in buying the device, it'll cost you $399 in the US, £309 in the UK, $519 in Canada, €399 in Europe, and ₹27,999 in India. Don't forget; OnePlus will be introducing the smartphone in a graphite silver colour now, but a soft gold model will follow later on this year.

OnePlus is rewarding individuals who download its virtual reality store with a two-hour head start for them to order the smartphone. But the website store will open up at 3:00pm ET (7:00pm GMT) today. So will this be your next smartphone?
