tvOS gets new features at WWDC 2016

At Apple's WWDC 2016 developer conference, Apple is adding some useful features to their Apple TV set-top box and the os that powers it called tvOS. The first thing that was highlighted was a reworked iPhone remote app that brings the same features from the handheld remote to the phone, which should make the app more helpful and easy to use. Also, Siri has universal search that will include YouTube in their content sources when looking for content to watch.

Apple is also fixing a major problem with most if not all set-top boxes when it comes to signing into apps with your credentials. Whenever you sign into an app like HBO, NBC, MLB, ABC, etc on most set-top boxes, you'd need to enter your credentials every time. With Apple's solution called Single Sign-on, you would only need to enter your credentials just once for a number of apps from the big networks such as HBO, NBC, ABC, ESPN, etc. It is important to note that Single Sign-on is also coming to iOS, according to Cue. There is also a new feature called Live Tune-in, which lets you open live programming streams for certain networks (including ESPN and Disney) by asking Siri to put the channels on.

Some other new features include a dark mode, for users who aren't fond of the bright grid background, as well as automatic downloads of apps between iOS and tvOS. For example, if you have an app on your iPhone that is available on the Apple TV, it will automatically download it. There is also the option for app folders, voice dictation, and support for iCloud Photo Library and Live Photos.

When Apple announced the Apple TV back in September, they bought the App store to the TV for the first time. Since then, there have been over 5,000 third-party apps, according to Cook in March. When comparing the number of apps to Roku, they only have 3,000 "channels" Cue even pointed out that if you just focus on video channels, The Apple TV App Store offers 1,300 options for you to choose.
