BlackBerry working on 3 new Android smartphones

Well-known smartphone producer BlackBerry has been pretty quiet lately, however, it isn’t scrapping its Android smartphones just yet.

Blackberry is planning to introduce three brand-new Android devices this year. Being more specific, VentureBeat has reported that a new smartphone will be released "per quarter for the next three quarters," Three new smartphones within a year is a serious amount of Android-based devices being launched by Blackberry - don't forget that last year the company introduced its first ever Android smartphone; the BlackBerry Priv, which wasn't very successful. Only 600,000 units were sold in the first quarter of 2016.

Earlier this year, BlackBerry's CEO John Chen stated that there will be two new Android smartphones being created soon. He also admitted that the Priv had failed because of his company.

"The fact that we came out with a high end phone [as our first Android device] was probably not as wise as it should have been," he said. Furthermore, he believed that the $699 smartphone was "too high-end a product," Consumers clearly indicated that they really wanted to purchase the Priv smartphone but the price tag seemed to have put them off.

Concentrating on today's latest rumours, these three potential smartphones reportedly consist of Neon, Argon, and Mercury codenames.

The Neon device could be the first release, possibly in either July or August this year. Here are some of the specs we could see on the smartphone:

  • a 5.2-inch 1080p touchscreen - without a physical keyboard.

  • Snapdragon 617 processor.

  • 13MP rear camera, as well as an 8MP front camera.

  • 3GB of RAM.

  • 16GB of storage space.

  • 2610mAh battery power.

The Argo device is to be released in October, boasting a range of sharper specs and features:

  • a 5.5-inch QHD touchscreen display - without a physical keyboard.

  • Snapdragon 820 processor.

  • 21MP rear camera, 8MP front camera.

  • 4GB of RAM.

  • 32GB of storage space.

  • 3000mAh battery assisted with QuickCharge 3.0.

  • Fingerprint scanner.

Finally, we're expecting to see the Mercury smartphone, which could be launched in the early stages of 2017. Check out the potential specs of it below:

  • a 4.5-inch HD display - including a physical keyboard.

  • Snapdragon 625 processor.

  • 18MP rear camera, complemented by an 8MP front camera.

  • 3GB of RAM.

  • 32GB of storage space.

  • 3400mAh battery power.
