500,000 hoverboards recalled thanks to fire hazard

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is now conducting the recall of about half a million hoverboards that were sold between June 2015 and May 2016, consisting of eight different brands. The reason is because the lithium-ion batteries within the hoverboards can catch fire. If the recall applies to you, you can return the hoverboard “for a full refund, a free repair or a free replacement depending on the model,” as stated by the CPSC.

Including the “self-balancing scooters”, there are products from 10 different companies being recalled. The Swagway X1, is one of the most popular products involved in the recall; 267,000 of them.

Now this isn't the first time hoverboards have been looked down upon. The US International Trade Commission had previously banned all hoverboard imports due to violation of Segway patents. In February, the CPSC sent a letter to a range of importers and manufacturers, asking them to remove hoverboards from shelves until they are properly safe for consumers in the US. Since January, internet retail giant Amazon is already working together with the CPSC and refunding purchases of hoverboards.

There have been reportedly almost 100 incidents in across 20 different states across the US, regarding hoverboards leading to approximately $2 million in costs for damaged property.
